Long before Cricket became codified, Jam Sahib used to play.
Those days there was no declared boundaries. The batsmen or their runners used to run as much as they could. Jam Sahib, being a king, kept a runner to run for – well – a run!
It is said that once Jam Sahib hit the ball and it went up a clock tower.
Cars were new and there was a traffic jam. It took quite a while to get the ball back to the field. By then the runner and the other batsman hoarded 76 runs and later three bottles of glucose saline each!
After that they started declaring fours and sixes and had a lost ball provision just in case!
