The story of a trade war

Filed under: Uncategorized — pramath @ 12:28 PM

I am not sure of the veracity of this one. However, given the entrepreneurial spirit of Gujaratis, it is probably true.

When the government of Gujarat freed up road transport sector from state monopoly, fierce trade war broke out for the lucrative trade route between industrial cities of Rajkot and Morbi. These cities are 65 kms apart.

The fare kept crashing until the no-profit level of ten rupees had reached. Competition was so tough that none gave up.
So the market innovated to “Free from door to door pick up and drop” model, eating into auto rickshaw drivers’ market.

Even this model was rampantly copied and the fare crashed to mere five rupees for the journey.

(Till this point I know it really happened.)

It is said that finally the buses ran anyway for FREE!!!

Everyone was welcome into the bus. The way to earn was almost Confuscian. It worked on the shame of traveling gratis.

A charity box used to circulate in the bus. Naturally, people deposited on an average five rupees for an hour’s travel!
